The N-type coaxial connector (N-female connector) is one of the oldest standardized coax connectors and has been around since the 1940s. The N-type coaxial connector is one of the most commonly used RFconnector types with a typical frequency range from DC to 11 GHz, with precision N-type connectors available that reach 18 GHz. This connector type is based on the MIL-STD-348 coaxial connector standard and is often found in 50 Ohm and 75 Ohm variants. The N-type coaxial connector is considered a rugged, medium-sized connector and is widely used in applications form military/defense, aerospace, space, test and measurement, automated test equipment, telecommunications, amateur radio, and many others. Type N Female Coaxial Connectors are often the external port type for connectorized modules and test equipment.
N-type female coaxial connectors are often found as N-type Female Coaxial Connectors for Coaxial Cable Assemblies, N-type Female Coaxial Connectors For Terminals (Flange Connector), and N-type Female Coaxial Connectors with field replaceable contact pins. N-female connectors for cable assemblies are designed with options to fit a variety of different coaxial cable types. There are several different options of attachment style with these coaxial connectors, including crimp/non-solder, solder, clamp/solder, and compression. Field replaceable contact connections are extremely useful for field repair of critical N-type coaxial connector ports for portable equipment, telecommunication installations, automated equipment, and any other field equipment that may experience wear and tear of the contacts or contact damage during regular use. The field replaceability of the contact prevents the need to replace the entire coaxial connector, which reduces the cost, time, and sourcing challenges typically associated with field replacing N-type female coaxial connectors.
For new coaxial connectorized equipment or for regular maintenance of N-type female coaxial ports on equipment, N-type female coaxial connector terminals, or panel mount flanges, are the common choice. There are several variations in the contact type for these flange mount connectors. Typical center contact types are slotted contact terminal, solder cup, pin, stub, tab, and threaded pin. There are several types of terminal mounting other than simple panel mount flange connector bodies, including press-in and hermetically sealed bulkhead types.
N-type coaxial connector contacts are often made from beryllium copper, other copper alloys, and are typically plated with gold or other highly durable contact finishes. The outer conductor for these types of connectors is also highly durable nickel plating over brass, or passivated stainless steel. Common dielectrics include PTFE and other low dielectric constant and high voltage breakdown dielectric polymers.
